Yes very rare. Why didn't you just get an AWD one?

Yes a complete running gear from a AWD impreza would fit, but you need everything from the donor car.
A mate did it to his FWD Impreza, complete engine/transmission swap from a 2.0 NA.

And once you have done it, the combined costs of doing it and the EXTRA you'll pay on your insurance will make it cheaper to buy an awd car anyway

Wouldn't it be slower aswell as you loose so much power to the wheels through 4wd. Unless it was a turbo I would say it isn't worth it.

@paulo p
mine is only a fwd ive came across a few fwd one in the breakers are they really that rare mine is only a 1.6 n/a
@
crewj
i could only find 2.0 n/a awd one's for sale and the insurance on the 2.0 for me would be fairly high
@
empty
cheers mate im wanting to keep the 1.6 engine but put the awd gearbox and awd running gear in the back.
@
alcazar
it more a project for me to do first fit the runnning gear then evetually when im able to afford to put a bigger engine in and insure it as a 2.0 i will already have the running gear in place just a matter of an engine swap
more of a built not bought project
@
wolf_gsxr ive seen only one 1.6 awd subaru and to be honest its not that slow yes there is extra weight but with a few small modifications it can still have good power
@
happydude303 aren't all conversions/engine swaps a ball ache at some point or another

You will have to declare the mods so the insurance will be the same if not higher. So I don't see why you would want to do it?

i would declare it without a doubt its more for the handling and being able to run rear disc brakes im going for, standard 1.6 4wd subaru's seem to have much better handling compared to the 2wd ones plus i always wanted a subaru but could never afford one i got lucky with this as i swapped it for a corsa b i had

It would be cheaper and easier to sell the one you have and buy an AWD one.

awd 1.6 would cost me a small fortune to buy plus there scarce to come by over in ireland plus i would have to tax and mot mine to get good money for it and then search all over for a awd 1.6
im starting to lean towards leaving it as it is as from looking around involes some welding and cutting of the shell.

You would do better looking at the US forums as they commonly do this type of swaps and they've got a lot of 1.8 Imprezas over there (which is almost the same as the 1.6). I would have thought any AWD box and drivetrain from a non-turbo Impreza (with cable clutch) would fit easily, Turbo stuff with hydraulic clutch may be trickier but still doable. The shells are all the same in this respect. I'd heard before that the 1.6 FWD was popular in Ireland. They stopped the 1.6 and 1.8 in the UK after around 1997 I think, although a new EJ16 came back for the bugeye shape.

I had heard that the 1.6 FWD handles pretty well and I'd guess it's a fair bit quicker off the mark than the AWD. I have a 1.6 AWD and it's too slow to really enjoy the handling and grip to be honest. To answer your main question, yes the swap is readily doable, but I'm afraid I have to agree with the majority and say it's not worthwhile. But if you want to go for it for the fun and experience of the project, then why not. You could come to the UK, buy a rotten 1.6/1.8 AWD for peanuts, export it to Ireland and use it as a donner, or buy a good one and just keep it.

Whatever you decide, good luck.
