Default Oil pick up pipe on hawk eyes

I have just been made aware of a problem on hawkeye models.
I personally think it should have been a recall but that's just an admission of something actually being wrong then .

The oil pick up pipe inside the sump,
Either cracking, splitting and not sucking the required oil through.
Can be fatal for the engine !.
This has happened to a couple of people we know already.....
Only way around it will be replacing your sump/ pipe/ dip stick

Any thoughts on this or anyone had first hand experience ???

Yeah - just had a rebuild on an 06 STI by API.
On strip-down, the pickup was defective.
There were pressure issues over a period of time about which I posted on here. Oil light not going off for ages on starting etc.
My well-respected Scooby expert mechanic insisted the pipes never fail, so there you go
Having said that, the engine had done 100,000 miles including about a dozen track days plus a remap.

Very common failure on 2.5 STI's including the Hatch STI, this is one reason for keeping your std oil pressure light on the dash when changing to aftermarket electical gauges & deleting the light, as the light gives a very good indicator on how long it takes to get oil pressure,a sure sign of pick up pipe cracking, while your Defi's are sweeping & calibrating for 20 minutes.
Seen cracked pipes as low as 25,000 miles.

its a bit nerve racking really considering a little pipe that you cant see can crack and do so much damage !!!

any step by step guides out there

The one on Csters car only showed cracked on pressure test on our head pressure testing machine, visually up 'til then it was OK then when we tried to bend it it fell in half.

The ONLY way is the drop the sump and look at it. No other test can be relied upon. In any case, buy a new one and have it ready to fit, 'cos if you get the car in bits and find it's cracked on a Saturday afternoon, it ain't going anywhere 'til you get one --- about Wednesday..

Or bring it to a specialist like us and we'll do it while u wait.

Am I right in assuming any classic / bug / blob pipe/sump/dip stick will
Do the trick ? .
No point putting another hawkeye pipe in if they all are prone to this !! .

martyp1970... if you can find a uprated one point me in the right direction mate, been doing a bit of research on the old net and appears to be a big problem on the late models.
Like you said cant you tell what the pipe is like till its to late, and yes you would think subaru would do a recall or something.

Anyone thinking of doing a group buy on a uprated one of these count me in lol.

Nah!, the one that fits the twin scroll type sump, I.E. the pointy shaped sump [ yours ] is different. From memory they are right handed as opposed to left handed - the fixing bracket faces the other way.

We've never had a problem with any standard ones WE have fitted over the years. Remember twin scroll cars go back to late 2002 so we've done a few. So it must be a faulty production batch problem on the later cars. OR we fit them better/ more carefully than Subaru do .................. Yeah that'd be it

Thanks cster found the company last night, they traded on scoobynet at the beginning of this year,but 200 usd then posting is going to be alot lol.
cant believe that no UK based company are doing these,

david ya probably right, probably a bad batch of a few hundred have gone through the system, i just hope mine was not one of the unfortunate ones by looking on various threads and pictures on the net.
maybe if i wish hard enough santa will bring me one lol

Sorry to revive this thread, But I'm seeing quite a fluctiation in pressures at around 3000rpm the oil pressure is up and down between 5.5 bar and 6 bar at 90 deg'c getting quite frequent is I'm honest. Do you guys suggest it maybe this pipe giving me the early sign's of cracking?

I'm due my regular 3000 mile oil change so I'll maybe order one and drop the sump off

Rob, Have you still got the oe oil light connected, it usually shows up with taking longer to get oil pressure up for the light to go out, something you can't see if you have Defi's etc.

Will a 2.0 sump fit my hawkeye ? ,
Will I need a different dipstick too.

Ive seen a few Hawkeye failures, my opinion is that the way the pickup is supported allows vibration, leading to cracking around the top of the pipe. Ive just finished a forged 2.5 Haweye build and I have fitted a phase 1 pickup and standard 2.0 sump for this very reason. I'm just building a new engine for my rally car, it will have a twin scroll setup but i'll be adding some bracing to the pickup.

It was connected up until very recently when I did away with the adapter to tidy the engine bay up and plugged my gauges straight into where the oe switch located. However I did notice it was taking maybe a little longer than normal to go out but I put that down to a bad earth as I had been having troubles, Normally it was fairly instant but recently has been taking longer to extinguish prior to removal.

I've ordered a new pipe today and will be here in the morning, so for peace of mind it's getting changed, I'll report back with my findings

I had low oil pressure (on the gauge) a couple of months ago so immediately took the car off the road until we work out what it is.

Got the sump off this week and found a 6mm crack/hole on the weld which I hope was the cause of the problems.

Currently working out wether to replace with another OEM pipe or to get the killerb version.

No it's a classic.

Cosworth 2.5 using a Coswoth baffle plate.

Spoke to Killerb and they said it was rare on classics but they had seen it before.

Is it worth doing a mod to these pick up pipes before they are fitted? Would it be worth getting a good welder to put some runs of weld longitudinally down the pipe over the problem area (say 50mm long) to prevent cracking?
As mentioned by somebody earlier, it really should have been a recall but it's surprising how few there ever are on Subaru's.

Was wondering a similar thing myself.

Got a choice with mine to repair the weld on mine (the weld around the top is the most comon weak point), or to go with the Killerb one which is bulletproof.

Well I set to with mine this evening, Pulled the sump off the car & on initial inspection everything looked ok. I removed the strainer to find a crack in the brazed section which has been allowing what I assume a small amount of air to pass past the o-ring causing it to chew it to bits as theres not allot left of the o-ring. Fitted the new one and new seal, refitted the sump & refilled with new oil & filter. on initial startup great oil pressure instantly running 2 bar on hot idle & 6 bar @ 2600rpm

Very relieved to have sorted it, Hopefully no futher damage has been caused by this failed part

Very good timing Thank god haha.

Just a small crack, just in the early days of getting much worse it's about 7mm across the braze which goes past the flange and up the side of the tube, I can only assume when it got hot it got to the point it opened up with expansion and drew a load more through it.

You need to take a bit of care fitting these. The reason they break is because the locating bolt hole is sometimes in the wrong position and by pulling it over to align the bolt it puts tension on the pipe. It is worth opening out the hole so that it all lines up naturally and then there should be no problem.

It is not a moving part, so there is no other reason why they would keep fracturing at the upper weld.

i want to ask ive just had my hawk 2.5 rebuilt and decided to remove the twin scroll sump and pick up and fit the flat sump and pick up how much oil should i put in it we changed dipstick but when you put 4.7 litres of oil in it it says its just below full but then smokes like hell and burns it off till it gets to just below min then the smoke stops do i need to change the insert dipstick goes into or which dipstick was i supposed to use think the one i got is out of a bugeye

if anybody knows that its like 4.2 litres etc id be greatful
