oil leak at back of engine
hi, hope i can get some advise, i have an oil leak somewhereat the rear of the engine, it appears to be a mist as it is coating everything at the lower rear before the gear box.does it sound like the rear crank seals, i have had offered the engine and box removed and new seals fitted for a £1000, but this seems a bit steep, any advise please its a my00 uk turbo .
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

if it is the crank seal it would just be leaking out of the join between the box and the engine it wouldn't be a mist. Turbo oil feed?
It is worth getting fixed pronto as a nice drip on a red hot exhaust will mean trouble!

I have what sounds like a similar problem on the turbo side of the engine at the lower rear - can be seen clearly when under the car.
I intend to remove turbo and downpipe to investigate when I have time. I suspect either steering rack/pipe leak or turbo oil return pipe leak. I think the rocker cover gaskets are OK - but that often is an issue.

Thanks, its not the rocker cover gaskets they seem fine no oil around that area, oil seems to be mainly drivers side back of engine gear/gear box, will take a look at the points mentioned, it was suggetsted that the seal could be scored after a gear box removal.

Trouble is that with the turbo and DP in place it's, really hard to see anything. I have another turbo to go on when I get time, so will fix it then, even if I have to get the engine out. Best of luck with yours.
