Default New pads - use the backing shims?

Some while ago I replaced the pads in the Brembos with DS2500 and re-used the backing shims that were on the original pads. As the Ferodos had a backing glued(?) on to the back, I've a feeling that maybe I should not have used the original shims?
What's the word on this?
