Exhaust fumes in cabin - likely cause?
Hi all,
I've got a 2001 WRX and have noticed that when I'm sat still or in traffic I get a strong smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin. I've had a gasket changed on (or near) the manifold, but the fumes continue... are there any likely causes, before I go spending a fortune on getting the garage involved again?
Thanks for any help.
PJ

Mines the same if im standing in traffic or on start up, I took my car to subaru and they told me its quite common on bugs for the up pipe to leak on the knuckle joint. They said that was the issue with mine so i hope this helps.

My local garage said their Scooby contact thought it was probably the up pipe - a common fault. So it's off to be fixed next Thursday, I'll let you all know how I get on. Thanks for your help :-)

Let me know how u get on, Im changing my up pipe to the STI straight through pipe before remap as the wrx has a cat in the up pipe. I was going to get the it fixed but when I was told the price from subaru I thought I may as well wait until remap time.

Evening all.
My Scooby has been the garage today and (I think and hope!) it's fixed... not more smokey fumes in the cabin.
It turned out that it *was* the up pipe that had failed. I got the engineer to show me what had happened...
For anyone that's interested, first have a look at this pic of an up pipe:

In my instance, the seam down the side had failed (was letting fumes out), and the weld between the pipe and the mount had also failed (was letting fumes out).
The up pipe contains a cat of some type, and so the fumes I was getting in the cabin were pretty much neat and unfiltered by this cat.
I've only had a quick whiz on dual carriageways and motorways, but the turbo seems a lot quieter and the performance a lot smoother. The up pipe fits here in the system:

It looks to be (a non-engineer!) that the up pipe may also push some air into the turbo, which is why I guess the turbo is not a lot quieter.
The replacement up pipe was about £200, and there was three hours labour to get the old one off and fit the new one. Luckily mine was done under warranty, and so didn't cost me.
Anyhoo, hope all this information helps people.
