Default What ECU ? Apexi, Simtek or ESL

What ECU ?

Apexi , will be 4 plug second hand plug and play, has knock level , but not sure if this will back off the ignition auto if there is high knock ? Also has the ability to hold different maps and boost levels. Also can increase fuel onone cylinder to help cooling. Will need mapping so additional £250 ish needed.

Simtek , ALS a possibility but on a road car would only be a small amount used (Gimmick) , New and will have some warranty , I think its plug and play ? but not sure if this will back off the ignition auto if there is high knock ? latest firmware is supposed to be good. Maffless if needed all in £800 and a bit more if I want ALS

ELS , Plug and play, has knock level and I can get new at about £550 mapped.I don’t think its as accurate as a Simtek ( Less 3D cell Data ) I need to keep Maff, unless there is a new one. Limited to 1 map, again unless there is a new one out I don’t know about.

In the mix to would be a Omex 600, that I can get cheap. A competentECU, with ALS, but will need a wiring harness to make, not a great problem, but def not plug and play. Maybe a problem for some mappers ??

Any help would be appreciated LOL

I have been reading lots of old posts and think simtek, or ESL. I still have the Omex as an option.

Anyone got the new ELS board ?

sorry to hijack but, im thinking of getting an apexi as i cnt really afford the simtek, by people saying it holds more than 1 map, this might be a thick question but am i to guess that i can change from 1 to the other using the hand pump, i mean controller? lol also how many maps does the apexi hold?

cheers.

I went for Syvecs, yes is expensive but most mappers will say its best.
Mainly depends what you want from ECU and from this i would go what will be best for your car.

I planning on 370bhp with a 20G turbo, road car mapped for low down grunt !
and no more mods, 2.5's will be more problems above this. ESL sounds good to be honest.

the hold 4 boost levels not 4 maps, selectable on the commander.

ESL, Simtek, Apexi all work well and all do a good job for the price.. the simtek is better but the cost is higher.. depends on your needs.

Apexi uses the maf sensor and needs a boost control kit or a boost controller to do more than 1bar of boost on the 92~96, apexi and Simtek have knock warning no control
ESL is available as a mafless version, and does have knock control.

Simtek will be smoother to drive and had two full maps.

question to the above, you say the simtek can have 2 maps, another stupid question perhaps, how do i change these without having a hand pump like the apexi? also i know the simtek has anti lag and launch control, can you set the lanch control and anti-lag on/off via a switch?

yours confusedly, jamie.

SimTek will be best bet as Simon suggest

Simon, has the ESL , ALS, or can you program some over run to keep the turbo on the boil ? A smoth drive is ok , but this is my fun car, I kinda like the raw kick of bigger turbos when I am going for it.

A new ESL will give me more £ for the new g.box i will need !

im in the same position got a 95 ra and i have fitted manifold uppipe decat full through exaust apexi induction kit, needing injectors fuel pump and front mount next but then what to have an esl or simtek if esl has antilag i think i would go for that as spending £1000+ on simtek is a bit steep more than what i payed for the car lol but if it is that much better maybe ill get one any suggestions?

I have never driven a car with ALS, but with some overrun you get some extra fuel down the turbo and it keeps spinning.

i keep seeing things about syvecs being way out of folks budget, i'm not sure it should be dismissed totaly, by the time you add on the price of buying, fitting and mapping then there is what £500 difference between a syvecs and simtek? (depending on which year) add in extra for launch control and antilag (although there more pub talk that worth having lol) at £150 a pop (someone correct me if im wrong here im not totaly up on sinmtek prices) then your done to £200-300 off it.

For the extra features within the syvecs and the improved results (going on comments from folks saying they have gone from simtek to syvecs) then is that little bit extra worth it?

To confirm price,

syvecs £1695 fitted and mapped
Simtek £945 fitted and mapped (not inc anitlag and launch)

so £750 difference in fact for a late classic if not getting launch and Alag, so does work out a bit more than 2-300, prob 400 all said and done if having the other bits. On new age the simtek is 1100 as a base price so the difference is alot less

I think I will go for the ESL and run without the maf , as it's not a track car and I will use the £ saved for other essential bits!
