Question Testing thermostat

Changed the thermostat on my car due to an overheating problem. Thought I'd test it before filing either in the loft or the bin.

The thermostat is marked 78°C. But when I dump it into boiling water nothing seems to move?

Can someone say which bit moves, i.e. where the opening appears to let the water pass, and how much movement should there be?

Thanks.

was the coolant in your expansion tank and pipes to the radiator warm when it was running?

If not its likely a sticky stat.

Thanks 53. So about 3-4mm of movement, I was expecting more. I'll check again, but I think it will be bound for the bin. Already have a new one fitted, didn't test that before installing it though

speedking, if you need another, I have a perfectly working one (simply swapped it out for a Zero Sports 71C one).

But never had any issues with the OEM though.

Yours for free if you need it....
