Default PLEASE HELP - Engine Blown - need referral please

Hi there

I am a new member and 10 days ago was a proud new owner of a 53 plate (03) Subaru Impreza WRX Estate 2.0 turbo. 59,000 miles, 2 owners, Fsh from Subaru up to 48k in 2009 serviced once since.

I took it to my fathers garage and had a full service done (very reputable independent) and when driving it home it has thrown a big end.

There is no comeback with the garage I bought it from and there was no warning or fault on the vehicle so please no positive suggestions there.

I have to replace the engine or recondition the current and have spent most of the day looking at the options.

I have had many engines offered to me and they all seem to have no providence which seems normal and they range from £900+Vat to £2500 + Vat for various levels of ancillaries being left attached. The best one I have found is £1800 inc vat delivered with everything left on it and it comes from a 44,000 mile NO history car.... It has been run before being broken and was fine and indeed comes with a basic warranty.

However a company has contacted me called reconditioned-engines link (i hope it works) http://www.reconditioned-engines.co.uk/index.php

They are offering what seems to be a complete rebuild for £1330 + VAT, I didnt get a chance to talk to them today but they seem from their website to be a competent outfit and I am really eager to hear if anyone has used them and had good or bad experiences with them.

I am VERY grateful for any other advice or ideas etc.

Thank you in advance

James (Gutted1074)

I would personally either buy from someone you know / off here or from a trader off here.

A word of advice, don't try and do this on the cheap, or you will end up in the same mess your in now with a knackered engine.

Speak to someone reputable, engine tuner in Plymouth, Roger Clark motorsport in Melton Mowbray to name a couple, it ain't going to be cheap, but you will have an engine that will last you provided you look after it and service it correctly, they are at the top of the game with Subaru engines and won't leave you wanting anything!!

Don't buy anything offered on eBay, especially from a company called awesome imports based in Bristol iirc, bunch of shisters!!

Good luck getting it sorted

Wow -- - scam company - Thank you all, and especially you Jura.

Ok - so Roger Clark in Melton Mowbray could be worth it... anyone have any other suggestions or indeed engines that they know of?

I intend to be a regular on these pages - although hopefully not because i need a new engine!! -

Nothing against your father garage. Did it fail 20 or 30 miles after the service was completed? If so thats pretty typical if the filter wasnt pre-filled. Ive never known it to be done on any other make or model of car. Scoobys are prone to it though if the filter wasnt filled before fitting. Just a heads up for when you get your replacement engine

Good advice but I advertise on ebay, so not everyone on there is a rip off, just get references and feedback before buying anything,

I have tarred everyone who advertises on eBay with the same brush, however from experience there is nothing on there that I would buy for my car for certain, to many horror stories I'm afraid.

Ive seen some shocking engines from customers who have bought originally from SMR, phase 1 pistons with phase 2 headgaskets, pistons hitting heads, and the amount of silicone sealer beggers belief
