Re Temperature question
Hi all, I have another question to you all.
I was driving to work this morning, and on a bypass, the cars temp went up to nearly the top, yet when I pulled over, the temperature gauge went down straight away to normal temperature? Any suggestions as to why this might be guys?... When I drive through town, it is sitting at normal?

Ok thanks for the replies, I had to give up and pull over an get recovered tonight as it was getting a bit hot for my liking... The coolant pipes where very full or compressed? Does this sound like thermostat?

test the thermostat mate. Even if you buy a new one check that too. When they manufacture thermostats, apparently some companies only check about 1 in 1000 or something like that. I had 2 new ones for my BMW on the trot that was faulty!

i had same prob in my scoob, temp only went up once, for about 5 mile..never did it again but noticed my coolant was emptying from my header and filling up my expansion tank,i had to keep topping up with coolant hoping it was an air lock, but after a sniffer test it was the fatal "H" word....so had to have new Head gasket,my scoob had only done 28k..so if its your thermostat your lucky mate.

Ok... So picked it up from garage, they said they suspect the dreaded HG but couldn't be 100% as it seems to be running fine at the mo. He Sao he done a sniffer test and there was carbon in the water but could already be there? How would it fix itself temporarily? Surely it's either gone or not?

Ok guys, so got the car in with a mate mechanic for a second opinion. The garage said its not the waterpump but said they are pretty sure it's headgasket. However.... My mate has looked at it and says that there is no water flow going through the engine. It basically sits there then boils the water. He said he put a dye in the water and it took ages before it turned yellow. And it diddnt fully turn yellow. So he recons as there is no water flow it's pointing back to the water pump. Any suggestions people?

The garage claimed that they had checked the waterpump. Could there be something hidden with the waterpump that they may have missed. It's a new rad so shouldn't be that?

Ok so after the garage 'ripped me off', I took the car to a good friend of mine. He done a head gasket test (dye in water?) and he said it takes absolutely ages to turn yellow, so he suspects it's not the headgasket. He called me down to his unit to show me his findings, and he is adament that the garage never even took off the waterpump, like they said they did in the invoice. All bolts looked undisturbed and no signs of having them removed. After a few nights of head scratching, he managed to find the problem. Basically, above the exhaust there is a metal water pipe. This had a crack in it. He said that this would be sucking air in and hence causing an air lock. He took that off, welded it up, fitted it, bled the system a few times, and hey presto, no over heating. He has used a tank of fuel trying and not overheated, I have had it to and from work and not overheated. So the moral of the story is.. Never trust those rip off gits at a garage! It seems that they are all out to rip you off. If you have a mate as good as mine, then you are in luck. I would like to thank you all for your replies and help with this issue. Fingers crossed, it is now solved. Woo Woo!

Just seen you're in Biggleswade - great garage not too far from there - CSC (Cambridge Sports Cars)- In Hardwick/Toft 01954 210 999. Main mechanics (both called Mark) look like they'rve just been let out of the Nick - but they're really nice and have a very good rep. Sometimes iffy on the bill - but always open to dealing on it. Body shop is very good too.
Otherwise RCM for all your needs - get what you pay for IMO...
