Unhappy rebuild costs...

Changed my woodruff key today and spent nearly an hour and a half getting the timing belt all lined up - eventually got it on then was time to test :-S
....now i rotated the crank through two full revolutions of the BELT and all was well, was quite stiff then would slacken off then stiffen up again ETC ETC (assuming the lobes on the cams yeah?) so then came the test..... primed the pump and sat there for 5 minutes absolutely shatting my kegs....double/triple checking that all the timing markers were lined up and they were - turned it over and an almighty BANG blew out the exhaust NOT the engine side.............. but this was enough to scare the shat out of me and ring Gipa with my tail between my legs lol

so best case....i'm a legend, done it right and it was just excess fuel

worst case.... i'm a twit and haven't timed it right

Now the car DIDN'T turn over IE run, literally made this bang out the exhaust and i killed the key.

How much would i be looking at best and worst scenario for a rebuild?? also name companies in the NE that could do this?? (assuming it would just be the heads would need building?)

Got to wait until the Great North Run has finished tomorrow to have Gipa have a spy and start it for real

Check youve used the line on the crank pulley for timing and not the arrow. The arrow sits at around 10oclock. If that is the case. Re time it and all should be ok

Have you got plug leads right, a backfire is ok, its clanking and knocking you worry about. Btw the belt goes stiff because of compression more than the lobes.
Ps you know there are 2 sets of timing marks, you use the lines not the triangles

Can you turn the motor by hand back so the crank is on TDC and post pics of all your timing marks?

As above, are the plug leads correct? I've done that before by mistake, and there was a massive bang too...

There was no clanking/knocking that I heard.
wasn't the belt that got stiff it was definitly the right side cams that felt as though they were on a hill (only way i can describe it, with belt on or off)
Yeah - single lines at 12, doubles at 6 (or 12 for bottom) and single will be 3/9 so long as your doubles are married up?

Yeah I can do, engine turns fine (apart from the 'hill' i mention above) with socket set not a problem

If it's bang on as you say and it turns by hand just start it. If you want to post pics for us to look at to put your mind at rest do that.

OK - i've taken the belt off again but pulleys haven't been moved...
When i reference these pullies, its asif your stood infront of the car looking at the engine....
Hard to get a picture of the marks on this top-left...looks a TINY bit off

Crank - hard to get a head on picture because i have a DSLR and with the lens it's deep and doesn't fit between the crank & rad

top-right

bottom right

Pic 1,3 and 4 are spot on. i can not realy tell from pic 2 where the intake cam is but as long as the cams on the drivers side are in the same position as on the pasanger side in pic 3 and 4 then the hole thing is right. put your belt back on and start it mate
