Default replacement ecu?

hi okay,

i have a turbo 2000 98 with as far as i can remember cas my car is in the bodyshop at the moment, it has the dreaded unmappable ecu inside her.

now without buying an aftermarket ecu because im strapped for cash atm..

is there any other cheaper subaru ecu, like an sti one or any other i can buy and get it mapped which will work out cheaper than £X00's for a simtek etc etc..

thanks! jamie.

You can not use one from an sti ,as some of the sensors are different and it will be fuelled for a sti turbo (vf24),not the td04 which is currently on your car.You could go down the route of an apexi ecu,but these still sell for £350 - £450,then you need to get it mapped to your car & mods.
Have a good luck under your passenger side footwell carpet and see which ecu you have, because if your car was made after October 98 it might have an E3 ecu which is an early 99 unit and mappable via ecutek.

The op cannot fit an ecu from a 99/00 car, its a different plug layout and iirc the 98 has four plugs.

The cheapest option would be to get an esl board, jgm can supply and map them.

Otherwise it's the full aftermarket route.

Simtek would be the sensible option...

not as simple as that, i think it more depends on future plans.

if wanna eventualy go big build then syvecs is worth buying now rather than have to replace it again.

Sure Syvecs is better, but you have to draw the line somewhere - £1074 v £1700 is a big difference (price of a replacement turbo, for example! ).

By all means, if OP wants to go all out and money not a prob, then yeah, go for the Syvecs.

But that's why I qualified my statement by saying the Simtek is the "sensible" route; as it's very capable... AND decently priced... (I'm indeed having one fitted/mapped on Friday by JGM lol ).

Think you may find the difference in price is not as much as you think, depending on the options you want?

Simtek for classic is £895, then £150 for AL/LC and another £150 if you want the software tools, making £1195+VAT I think? This is "only" £300+VAT less than a Syvecs, and you get so much more for that extra. (The price differential for newage is much less than that as well).

And no decent knock control in the Simtek at yet, unless I missed a press release?

I'm also not sure that the current Simtek runs a wideband natively, whereas the Syvecs can run fully closed loop even on boost

Don't get me wrong - Simtek is an excellent choice and I know of many many happy customers; so it usually boils down to what your future plans are and whether closed loop with a wideband, user map "tweaking" etc are a high priority

(PS - if I may be permitted a wideband "plug" Wideband on a Syvecs is plug and play...and I can supply a PnP wideband lambda and a cable harness for a reasonable price if that's of interest Also a touchscreen display unit that works 100% with Syvecs at the moment but not with Simtek until they send me the protocol

Fair points made there.

I was of course comparing the Simtek without the added cost of AL/LC, at the £1074 price point. But as you say, adding those brings the 2 closer together, and the Syvecs closed loop w/b is an excellent feature.

As regards knock control on the Sim, that was allegedly in the pipeline, so not sure if/when the software upgrade is available?

But that aside, the Simtek just has a PFC-style flashing CEL to alert the driver to knock activity....

I still get the giggles when I think about that period in which you enthusiastically kept recommending checking/changing spark plugs to various members' running issues (because it had worked for you).

You went ape****!
