Default spool up?

if my 2002 sti was fitted with aftermarket tubular headers and a 3"full decat exhaust system and a front mount intercooler........

would a td05 20g have a quick spool up or would it be laggy as hell? anyone know what rpm it would kick in at?

Depends on what 20g, a AF or Harvey turbo should make full power quicker than a run of the mill 20g. Also if you get a harvey uppipe to match that would help spool.

I am viewing from a phone so it's hard to see the turbo properly but in the description they say that it is suppose to be a AF hybrid, i personally wont avoid as there is little info and it may be crap. Speak to Harvey as he had a AF 20g that was taken in px for another unit.

Cool

Yes Harvey up-pipe a necesscity.

Yes Harvey does have a website... Harvey Smith something or other.... ?

Also AF Andy Forrest has a website too...

Best turbo would be something with a Garrett BB core for good spool. SC42 would suit nicely.

I have a 2002 STI with an Andy F 20g and RCM headers, Duncan mapped it on Thursday....His words as we gave it the first pull "That 20g is going to be a bit perky on here"

Ive read quite abit on 20g's about how laggy they are but IMO they are not that bad, i love the way the car drives now, pulls right up to the redline and gets there bloody quick, so much better than the VF35 i removed....Ok, there are far better turbos out there but they cost far better money.

The word lag only applies if your in the wrong gear!

1.3bar full boost? That's a bit conservative for what you've got. Even so, that's good for those revs. Is it a WRX?

you cant genralise like that though really as it is all dependant on turbo size, 1.3 on my old td04 is different to 1.3 on my td05 20g- natuarly.
How much power will the box and clutch take though? at 1.3 bar i would expect to see between 330 to 360 bhp as it stands

My friend running 400bhp on OE WRX engine few years without the problem, with box and clutch you have lucky draw/guess,if its hold or will broke...

WRX engine will hold without the going forged 400bhp..

WRX engines will be good(ish) to 350, you see them starting to let go at 330, 350bhp is deemed "safe" but you take your chances, 400bhp will see it fail, sooner or later....

Generally agree but it also depends on the age and condition of the engine. If we are talking about a 6 figure mileage engine then suggest lower, if a late blob wrx then they have been seen to take more than average. Have had 411 out of a blob wrx engine before - admittedly it wasnt in the car long though (it didnt fail) as he put in an sti lump.

In the real world a well sorted VF turbo would probably make for a quicker car though than chasing peak power figures.

No, that's fine for a WRX I mistakenly thought it might have been an STi with stronger internals and stronger box.
