Default Radiator just gone pop !! Help/info needed

Hi snetters

Just coming home and after a lil tickle I noticed a lil steam coming out of the scoop, I pulled over to notice that the plastic part on the top of the rad has split right nxt to the air intake for the air box. luck has it I was about a mile from home and didnt loose much water at all (thank god)

Few questions I have is 1. Would anything cause this to happen or would you say its just wear and tear that the plastic has cracked ? 2. What do you think of this rad http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUBARU-IMP...item2eb4cd86c2 3. How long do you recon it would take to fit so I can work out how much the garage will charge to fit it ? 4. Do I need to use a certain coolant when re filling coolant ?

2002 wrx wagon

Hope some of you can help with the questions I have.

Cheers

Rich

I try and stay away from cheap eBay stuff, it's up 2 you mate, it does look tempting for the price with a 2 year warranty.

Thats what I thought, 2 yr warranty with it so should be ok. Im not running big power and not bothered about saving weight at this point so no need for ali one at the min.

How long do ya recon to fit, bout an hr ?

I have pink in my STI you can use either as long as suitable for an all alloy engine, just don't mix the 2 together. I use a 50/50 coolant to water mix in mine. If a garage is doing the job you should be ok as long as they can be trusted to not just fill with water.

About an hour to drain, remove rad and refit new, do the top hose at the same time.

Refilling can take up to half an hour, do it S L O W L Y then no airlocks, search on here for correct method.

If it's cracked, it's almost certainly rad failure, but check the coolant remaining and the oil anyway, headgasket failure can over pressurise the coolant system.

Exactly the same problem this week. I was losing water and started overheating but couldntfigure it out, had the bonet open twice and couldnt spot it, got it home and revved with the throttle cable and all of a sudden a steady little spurt came out of the plastic housing, mine was further to the right but seems to have a crease with a tiny pinhole in the middle.
Time for a new one too and saw that rad for 57 quid and am considerin getting one also.

Ordered mine on Friday, received this morning (bank holiday too!)
Had my reservations but was perfect fit and quality seems to be the same as the original.
seems to be a very good product for the money, including the warranty.
