Unhappy Timing issues after engine swap

Good afternoon, ver3 import wrx 97. I've just swapped to a sti long motor after my wrx spun a shell or two. I've used wrx inlet sensors cam pulleys etc.

I've tried a couple of different timing positions, as per the manual and -16 as the original engine was set. But with no joy :/ won't fire up and every forth or so revolution I get a backfire down the exhaust.

Are my wrx cam pulleys the same timing marks as the sti?

Any other ideas? I'm struggling a bit

Thanks in advance bjd

Timing belt actually on correct?

I've seen one where one/two of the cams were 180 degrees out..

Cam and crank pulleys are the same on the WRX/STI on the classics.
Make sure there are no broken pickup lugs on the crank pulley.
Use the line(all pistons halfway down the bore) on the crank pulley and not the triangle(TDC) to set the timing up.

as above sounds like you have it set to the arrow and not the line on crank
