Default Lifters, how can you tell if they are hydraulic or solid??

As above really is there anyway to visually tell which type of lifter is in the engine?

Reason being I have a semiclosed deck engine I bought second hand that I¬m trying to find out whats what, I`m sure that its an STI engine (early one), as it is really rattly, sounds like my mates old Ford Escort which had solid lifters. I think mine need adjustment as they are noisy, and not just piston slap at cold.

The hotter and more the engine gets ragged the quieter it gets lol.

A quick check if the cambelt is off :
Hydraulic lifters, you will have resistance as you turn the cam due to the hydraulic lifters being pumped up.
Shimmed buckets(under or outer), no resistance when turned until the lobe ramp touches the bucket.
