Knocking engines ?
Hi
I'm new to Subaru's and have seen quite a few imprezas advertised (or being broken for spares) due to knocking or slightly knocking engines. Before i get worried, is this a common failing or is it due to overtuning, abuse or neglect?

Any/all of the above!!
Treated right (i.e. not driven like they're stolen 24/7), looked after properly (i.e. best quality fuel and consumables, serviced on time) and tuned correctly (i.e. within the design limitations of the engine/ancillary spec), they're very reliable cars!!
It's just a question of consulting people in the know. Talk a a specialist before you comit and you'll be laughing!
Be warned though, these are not cheap cars to run and they do not tolderate people who neglect or abuse them!!

In edition to the above, make sure the engine oil is up to temperature before any 'spirited' driving, then let it cool down adequately before switching it off.
Oil lubrication issues cause the majority of failures, so make sure you use the best quality oil, and change it regularly to keep it clean!

We only use Millers CFS 10w60 Motorsport engine oil. Silkolene Pro R 15w50 would be a second option - we wouldnt use anything else!
We have rebuilt 2 engines in the last 4 months that failed simply because they used the worng engine oil.
