My bottom end is knocking on my MY00 Classic and I need to find a replacement. Its a standard engine internally, running a VF35, FMIC, Walbro, full exhaust system and ECUtek map. Its currently mapped on vpower but I'm hoping to get it mapped down to 95RON and about 300bhp.

I'm getting all sorts of mixed reports and I need some clear advice. I know I'll need a map tweek after the replacement so have allowed for this

Questions are

Can I use a complete wrx engine or bare engine from an earlier car (95/96/97 etc) and drop it straight in, maybe swapping my ancillaries etc in the process?

Are there piston/compression differences between years/specs that I should look out for?

Based on my budget for an engine or block (£300-500) I know that I wont get an sti or closed deck etc so i'm only looking for something that will drop in unless someone can point me in another direction. Can I use a Legacy GTB engine (sti pistons?) and blank off the 2nd turbo bits?

If anyone has or knows of a cheap engine or bottom end please let me know as i'll be looking to purchase in about 2 weeks.

I have a mate who has bought a W reg uk turbo , 2weeks ago complete car with the engine still running. I was considering buying the engine off him,as he is breaking the whole car,and having it as a spare in case mine lets go in the future.The car has done 92,000 and the engine really sounded 'sweet as' ,if your still interested , pm me think he wants £450 - £500 complete minus turbo.
