Default Kinda blue smoke on start up

Ok as some of u know I have a new sti 2011 saloon and today I noticed smoke ooooo errrr , did some research and I'm coming to think of some turbo oil stuff but wanted everyone's views, I took wife to station today and had a spirited drive home all was well oils full no noises etc, sat car in spot for 6 hours then went out to go pick baby up from nursery I started it and looked behind me and saw not loads but some whitish blue smoke, it was only on start and It cleared, as car warmed up all was well, has some emissions whilst cold but that's normal

Anyone any ideas, obviously with the engine issues I want a steer as the cars fine no drop in power no drop in oil no noises just this ploom I've only seen it once before

So I was just wondered as I had a spirited drive this morning copuld I have something that's backed up etc I've no idsea not a car man hehe

It's due service in 1500 miles

Worst case would be the piston rings but that would smoke all the time yes ?

If you have gave it some stick the previous drive, it's just abit of un burnt oil in the zorst I wouldn't worry it will go away after a few start ups

From what your describing from the symptoms to are describing is either 1 of 2 things.

1:- Hard launch or eratic set off causing engine oil in the sump to be thrown up the crank breather and sucked through the intake system due to there being too much oil in the car in the first place.

2:- Piston/Piston-ring or Ringland fracture causing excessive piston blow by therfore burning a little more oil than normal due to damage within the combustion chamber.

Only usually smokes on the first start of the day or very late after its stood all day, dont normally smoke when running.

The oil collects in the core of the inter-cooler and runs into the throttle body so when you first start it the oil is drawn in and burnt in one go.

you can usually tell if you have a ringland away, excessive oil consumption/ Excessive smoke on start-up & occasional skipping on the starter-motor when starting the car which signifys a loss of compression within a cylinder (Usually CYL2)

And if it was just the odd one or two then what

How longs it take to do compression test at the garage easy or not

Is it something one can request on a service

More common on cold start to be honest.

if it is skipping even just once then theres something wrong mate.
Roughly about an hr to do a compression test on the engine, You can request anything in a service mate, just make sure they dont bull**** and they do actually carry it out

My 2009 STI hatch normally does not smoke on start up at all, 12K miles now and no abnormal oil use. I also was worried when on the odd occasion I did see a puff of smoke on startup from cold. I thought ringland failure on it's way!! But having monitored this for several months now it appears to happen only after some spirited driving. I put it down to oil from the breathers getting somewhere and being burnt off....hence the use of catch tanks being addeed to breather systems I suppose. Nothing to worry about unless you see a dramatic change in use of oil or smoking when driving in my opinion.

Ok tested got son in car started it and she was fine some White condensation smoke as with all cars on the initial start that went more or less straight away. Oil smoke lingers if mem serves me right

Then the normal White stuff as she warms up just poppin outa exhaust then disappearing

I,ll monitor oil and also noises but in think I'm worrying about it too much and me driving spiritedly may have left some residue or something somewhere It had rained hard also and car was parked downhill

Keep ya posted

The dipstick is your best friend, any sign of the oil level dropping, chuck some in.

You could worry the dealer into checking how much oil is in the intercooler too !

is the oil level ok on the car ?? not to high or anything. I know on the 20 or so that I've done they are fine when driven normally but once given some stick they compress the crankcase more than usual & blow oil up the breather tubes this is down to a broken ringland.

Well I checked today and it looks full, so it may be slightly over which will cause it it's not overly full though it's bang on the hole on the dip stick

Would that be it ?

When hot it should be at max, when cold it should be between min and max

Classis mistake for overfilling, its only between min and max better chuck it to max and when it gets hot its over filled when oil expands

Not what I know Rob, mine failed and it was piston 4 and I was told that it is usually this piston that goes (Hawkeye). Mine smoked very heavily on start-up from cold and constantly smoked lightly after it had warmed. Now I get mild smoke on start up but it's white not white/blue. Goes after 2-3 mins. I've got a forged re-built engine if this helps. I think that you may be just being paranoid but I don't know. I know that I constantly worry about mine and it takes away most of the pleasure of owning and driving a car like this. The best advice I could give is stop worrying and just enjoy it. If you always warm the car up before driving and cool the turbo before switching the engine off and service it regularly then it shouldn't go wrong. Mine was abused by the last owner and its cost a lot to put right.

Cylinder 2 & 4 are the main culprits on the 2.5 and the ones with extensive bore damage smoke like a pig on startup but usually clears after a while, some do some dont depends on how serious. Mine destroyed the block and pistons when cylinder 2 let go and smoked that badly you couldnt see behind the car & the fact it used 4.5 ltrs of oil to do 100 miles it was bad
