If a vac line has come off the actuator it would be stuck closed not open causing it to overboost

As regards engine over heating, not much info given so my guess is a headgasket issue or loss of coolant due to a leak

cheers pal, have had a coolant issue and vac line needs better piping, would it cause issues if incorrectly installed?

Your boost control pipework should be checked by someone who knows what they are looking at and has to be 100% correct otherwise boost prolems occur.

Over boosting alone would not cause over heating

If it is one of the turbos I think it is the wastegate arm design is poor and the arm locks into fully open past the 90 deg travel point when the actuator is open giving no boost at all from there on.

Trouble is if you wind the actuator arm in fully it will make lots of boost and quite probably too much boost for your wrx.

Not a good turbo IMO.
