Default OIL COOLER ADVICE

need a oil cooler for the type r but whats the best to go for (running aprox 400 bhp)
quality it has to be mocal
but what size 10 row 16 row 20 row ect
thermostat or no thermostat

and how to check oil and fill up ect

have a look at the hyperflow top mount oil coolers. saw one fitted to a car recently and they look to be a good job. expensive though.

Hi fella, I have a fmoc fitted to my Spec C as you can see in the piccy, cant tell you the exact spec as you are requesting but it was fitted from stock at Tracktive Solutions, a quick call to Richard or Matt and they can provide all details including prices, hope that helps

I have exactly the same setup on my Spec C and it's very good at keeping the oil temperatures down.

have to say i do find this a bit on the daft side. Why would you want to move one cooling device due to ambient temp issues and replace it with an even more critical cooling device?


Here's mine, fixed betwen the top and bottom cross members and fits even with a front mount

If you want to keep your oil temps down then go for the same setup that I have with 25 rows some might call it overkill, it comes with a thermostatic sandwich plate as part of the kit.

The kit is so efficient that Bob Rawle told me how impressed he was with the way it kept the oil temps down during a recent mapping session.

Just checked, mine is also 25 row, it needed the upper and lower std mounting brackets removing to squeeze it in but looks spot on.

totally agree with the location must be front mounted

but if using a stat is it tricky to find oil levels

We can offer the HEL oil cooler kits, they can come with a thermostatic sandwich plate and also a choice of core size.

They are 19 row or 25 row and the 19 row can come with a duct too

Mine as stated is a 25 row - on Autobahns/Nurburgring/Brands I've not seen more than 100 degrees oil temp so I'm happy with the size. I would always fit a thermo plate as your oil will take longer to warm up and potentially not even get up to temp on very cold days.

One of the SES members has a 19 row with plate for sale

I was more than happy with the Advanced Automotives/Scooby Projects kit.

Only thing I've added is conduit over all the braided hose to stop it rubbing plus heat shield/fireguard over the hoses where they are close to the manifold.

How much do these generally drop the temps by? My highest oil temp I've recorded is 116 degrees c. Would love to get that down a good bit.

mine went from 110 peak (that was backign off at 105) down to no more than 90.

will def sort out the 116.

as far as 100 after the oil cooler, that seems very hot, wheres the cooler located? i'm yet to see over 92 when giving it death even on a roasting hot day. (although a 2.0 standard engine not a 2.5)

What kind of prices is one expected to pay for a reasonable kit, and I mean one for an everyday road car with occasional track use. Obviously I dont need a RCM version, but equally I dont want to flebay special

Also Ive heard quite a lot about folk placing them in the TMIC location with no issues. whats your opinions?

I was going to get the one in the for sale section on here, but missed it by minutes

i have just fitted a 25 row mocal one to my classic, with a sandwich plate with a built in stat. dont forget some sort of fire sleeve around the hose where it goes by the exhaust

Personally I reckon if your car is for just road use one of these is not needed, however on track if you like putting in longish stints I think they are essential. I was advised to stay away from top mounting my oil cooler because of the risk of a leak occuring and oil covering the top of the engine which in turn could lead to engine bay fires also as stated having it front mounted is the best place for cooling.

As for prices.... I have fitted a Hyperflow stage 3 sump so wasnt about to scrimp on the oil cooler, go for the best you can afford, it may help save your engine

Rob personally i went for Setrab/Mocal and price around £250 is OK,if you contact Think Automotive he give you good deal,usually 10-15%

And position is best front behind the grill,i have there fitted mine with Gearbox cooler(Setrab/Mocal too),and i don't like the idea fitting on TMIC position,because its little bit scare if something goes wrong.

afraid thats not true, mine is a road car and saw temps hot enough to make me back off. You have to take each car on its own merit on how hot it gets. Just saying its a road car, its fine, doesn't work

Best place is probably in the front inner wing with feed from fog cover and outlet on side of bumper so as not to interfere with the rad/A/C air flow.

I wouldnt have room in my Driver (UK) inner wing due to the CAI feed and Intercooler piping. So im guessing I would need to use the Passanger fog which other that an Oil Cooler the forced ducted air would have nowhere to go with the Battery being in the way to force ducted air out of the wing. Would by not ducting the air out likely blow the inner wing liner out?

I would be open to see some pics

Would be £239 for the 19 row kit and £259 for the 25 row kit. The duct is £45 and any ducting required would be £14 p/m
