Default 04 STI, Do I have to take engine out to check shims and gaps?

Hi,

Ive got a ticking/taping noise on my engine.

Do I have to take engine out in order to take the head off? I want to check the gaps with a feeler gauge?

Ok, got rocker cover off. What should the gaps be between cam and bucket?

Feeler gauge at the ready

Hi Merlin, thanks for the reply.

The valve clearances are all OK, I now want to check the tightening torque of the cam shaft caps. What should this be?

Thanks!

Cam caps with M8 bolts are 20 Nm
Seal Carrier Cap with M6 bolts are 10 Nm.

A failed big end can sound a bit like a noisy follower to the un-trained ear, for what it would take to do I would drop the oil into a clean container and try and strain it through a clean cloth, if it is big end/crank you will get evidence in the oil- copper debis.

That's what I thought first, but can't see it leaking anywhere. And the tap comes and goes through the rev range.

Yes, take all the plugs out and crank it over by hand, it's not as accurate as fast cranking but should show any major differences.
