04 STI, Do I have to take engine out to check shims and gaps?
Hi,
Ive got a ticking/taping noise on my engine. Do I have to take engine out in order to take the head off? I want to check the gaps with a feeler gauge? John ASAP Please, waiting now. hehe:luxhello: |
Ok, got rocker cover off. What should the gaps be between cam and bucket?
Feeler gauge at the ready |
Inlets 0.006~0.008"
Exhausts 0.008~0.010" Mick |
Hi Merlin, thanks for the reply.
The valve clearances are all OK, I now want to check the tightening torque of the cam shaft caps. What should this be? Thanks! |
Cam caps with M8 bolts are 20 Nm
Seal Carrier Cap with M6 bolts are 10 Nm. Mick |
Ok Thanks.
I will carry on tomorrow. Ive also posted this https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ing-noise.html |
A failed big end can sound a bit like a noisy follower to the un-trained ear, for what it would take to do I would drop the oil into a clean container and try and strain it through a clean cloth, if it is big end/crank you will get evidence in the oil- copper debis.

Will do this tomorrow. Thanks.

Drained oil through a paper filter, perfect colour, no particles or bits in the oil. Clean!
Any more idea's Engine should be out in the morning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uap2ml80S5E |
Exhaust gasket blowing?
|
That's what I thought first, but can't see it leaking anywhere. And the tap comes and goes through the rev range.
|
Any more ideas?
|
I would do a compression test just to see if that is ok?
|
Can i do now the engine is out?
|
Yes, take all the plugs out and crank it over by hand, it's not as accurate as fast cranking but should show any major differences.
|
Who can i get to take a look at this engine?
