Default Help!! Possible piston ring failure?

Guys I'm appealing for advise. Just driving home from wok my car isn't very well. Symptoms are.
High idle - 1500rpm
If lifting off when on boost revs itself about another 500 - 1000 revs
Doesn't self rev if not been on boost.
Revs regardless of in gear or not, clutch pressed or depressed.
Boost falls off as expected. Although flickers on new high idle.

My worry is it's burning oil to rev itself after the presure builds from full throttle.
Anyone got any ideas / thoughts?

One of my cylinders has severe piston ring failure and the car shakes like a bugger on idle due to uneven compression.

Giz what do you mean by breathing heavy? Oil temperature got to past 100 when normally struggles to reach 90 on the same journey. It doesn't shaken at idle but sounds a but tappy slightly which I don't ever recall seeing and vibrates a bit when revved manually on the throttle body.

Black indicates fuel. Maybe a dodgy MAF? ive had ring failure before, and the smoke was clearly blue...

Is there's a way of testing the maf by unplugging it or something?

Unplugging it is a myth. The only sure way of checking it, apart from replacing with a new one and seeing if your problems go away is to check the MAF voltage with a multimeter.

Haha nice to know someone local! I've got a multi meter so can check it. Do you know what conditions I need to check it an what I'd expect to say it's working correctly?

Find the pinout at the ECU, shove your test probes into the back of the sensor ground and the MAF sensor signal pins.. Take someone with you to hold/watch the meter and go for a drive. You (or your passenger) should see the voltage fluctuating between around 1 and 5 volts. The more air being taken in, the higher the voltage.

If you accelerate hard, you should see the meter reading rising steadily and consistently. If at any point you see it dropping significantly out of the trend while you are accelerating (so, for example, you see a progression like 3.20/3.30/3.35/2.00/3.50/3.60), and you know you didn't lift off the throttle, this is a warning sign.

If running on oil you'll get blue smoke outta exhaust. If you got a broken ring you'll feel and see the engine running uneven. From memory think the MAF runs around the 1.2v mark at idle and upto 4.0v WOT under load. You may wanna check for air intake leak
