Default Replacement turbo, 2003 STI.

First off, apologies if this is a topic that's been discussed to death, but I may need to find one very soon so I'm up against it.

Basically theres a chance my turbo is damaged/dead/deceased on my 2003 STI, it's currently being looked at. If this is the case and the best/only option is to replace the turbo what are my options?
The car is standard at present and only used on public roads but I'm not exactly 'slow' driver. I've always liked the idea of small mods to the car but until now have had no real reason, but as the car is currently poorly this might be the opportunity to start.
The advice I'm looking for is, what is a solid and proven turbo replacement upgrade that isn't gonna be a nightmare to fit ? And once done will this and a remap alone give me a noticeable difference in performance? Or will further mods be needed?
Other option of course is to source a standard turbo, but how would this compare price wise to going for something different.

More info required John please, Is it a UK or JDM car (VF35 or VF37 or maybe VF30).

A remap on any of the two would see some good power figures alone, so a straight replacement turbo for £250+ should see you grinning.

Have a look at this recent thread John......if it were me, I'd get a few more mods on your car, and upgrade the turbo

Just a thought on top of the above info ^

If you go down the road of changing the turbo for like for like, swap the down pipe for a decat, add a Walbro FP, remap = you should see a good 50+ bhp easily depending on what your spec already is. I mean if you have a UK car then you'll have a VF35 and your likely running around 260bhp, there is no reason with the above simple mods why you cant get past 310bhp+

John, Ive recently built a P1 forged engine and we fitted a Vf48, it made 292/312 before fitting the turbo, after fitting the VF48 it made 346bhp on a safe map, it would of gone to 360ish if pushed a bit more. There are a load available at the moment, check out ebay. If I do the engine build for you it could be fitted at the same time, speak to Graham (enginemapper) for the re-map........Andy
