Default Bumper bar off, classic 98 car?

Going to try replacing mine, the one on is slightly bent and when I put my new bumper on I want it right.

Any tips? A local bodywork guy has told me that they are a PITA to undo the 17mm bolts without shearing them off? CAN you get at them to use WD40 etc? If you take the bumper skin off first?

Is heat a good idea?

I had 1 of mine captive nuts out of the 6 come off. I just got an alligator saw to it. Easy job really.

Removed a few and never broken a bolt.

If it sheers you should still be able to get old bar out and replace bolt in new one.

I did wonder about that Simon: if one shears off, it OUGHT to go in the captive nut? In which case it OUGHT still to come out?

I suppose I COULD drill it too?

yes if the captive nut comes off then that could be a pain to remove but they are pretty well welded to the bumper bar..

if it goes tight when unscrewing just play the thread, wind in, back out etc dont force it.

I have had several on/off too, never had any problems so should be fine.

Easy to get to with WD40 once bumper skin is off.

Thanks for all the replies.

My question stemmed from ta mate who has a paintshop, he has one, a 96 plater, started to take the bumper support bar off, one of the bolts was tightening, so he bottled it, just removed the skin.

As I said, I want a new one as mine got SLIGHTLY bent in early days

Funny you should mention that Jeff as mine has the same problem from a earlier meeting with something it shouldn't have
I've got a bumper bar sat down work ready to change it but haven't found the time to do it as yet.
