Default Could it be anything else??

Hi guys, the EML light came on the other day on my classic import, it has trouble starting but once its warm it runs fine. I put the black read connectors together and it comes up with code 21 'engine coolant temp sensor'. I changed the sensors with 2nd hand ones from local breakers but the EML is still on... So my question is, would it be that the new sensors i put in that are def faulty or could there be something else i need to check or change?
Thanks for any advice

Break in the wire, dodgy connector, or perhaps was another duff sensor. I'd check the wiring back to the ECU.

leave battery off over night to be sure that you have cleared the code.
