Default help identifying parts

Hello all,

I pulled my engine out due to head gasket failure, upon removing the heads i was pleasantly surprised to find it had a set of Mahle forged pistons fitted, so i then decided i would give the engine a freshen up (rings and shells etc) and see if any other goodies were fitted with the pistons, in hope of finding something special. What was inside are these rods

and this crank

It has also had oil squirters machined into the block for under piston cooling etc so has underogne quite a bit of work with the previous owner.

Now, i can see the rods aren't forged, but can anyone confirm whether these rods and crank are standard 1994 wrx items or whether they're uprated i.e Sti etc as i'd like to know what i have and what they can handle.

Thanks

ok cool are they standard on wrx's too or was it just on sti's and did the rods and crank look anything like mine?

Bore Squirters came standard on the Closed Deck Block and on a few Open Deck Blocks around MY'94.
Rods and crank are standard WRX/STi items (no difference between the two on the Phase 1 ~ 1.5) so nothing special there.

Nice to find some decent pistons in there

If you want to 'push' it, 380 is prob as far you want go - the relatively breathless WRX hydraulic heads will prob limit to about that anyway. (At least the pistons will be okay! ).

BUT... to keep the 'odds' of a non-failure on your side though, this side of 340 is probably advisable. Your existing TD05H 16g turbo (assuming a saloon?) is already good for it. So...

Walbro 255 fuel pump
550cc side feed injectors
large cone air filter
Hybrid GT FMIC
decat d/p + system
NGK PFR7G plugs
uprated MAP sensor
ESL Live MAFless remap (from JGM or dynamix)

Sorted.

for now i'll be happy with 340-350 ish if needed as it's my daily driver, it's a wagon so has a td04 fitted at the minute, it has already got a hks mushroom filter and i've got a td05 to fit that i bought from gooner on here. I've also got some stainless tubular headers, down pipe, decat up pipe and a big fmic from ebay, so once the engines back in and been run in i'll be fitting these too.

I'm still looking for a set of injectors for descent money, iirc i currently have the yellow injectors fitted, am i right in thinking these are 440cc injectors?

I wont be going to an esl remap yet, i'm currently using a chip of major sarcasm which i'll send back to him for a tweak etc, that will have to do for now as most of my funds are tied up in the bits i've bought and my rebuild etc.

Also you say the wrx heads are breathless, which heads would be best suited to a wrx block? i'm still getting my head round all the different versions of the ej20 engine and the compatibility of varying parts etc.

Out of curiousity what would one be looking to pay for an esl remap?

Will a 3 bar map sensor be suffice?

thanks

Yellows = 440cc yes. Good for 325bhp. 340 if they're rinsed (not a good idea!).

Don't worry about the heads. Only breathless at up around the 380+ point. They won't be troubled at 350bhp.

Aftermarket 3bar MAP is fine. Or you can use one from a MY99/00 car which I think is 2.7bar

While its in bits you would be better off losing the early nut & stud rods, there weaker than the later bolt type.

Rods look like 93-94 WRX. With your pistons and put together properly you probably have a safe 400 bhp potential.
Avoid down shifts at high rpm as that is what puts most strain on the rods.
O/E crank is good to considerably more power than you will ever make but use good bearings like Subaru or ACL Race.

ok thanks all, i'd be happy if i can squeeze it to about 350-380bhp for a while, as soon as funds allow i'll build something else to run more. Did any scoobys come with side feed 550 injectors as standard?

I have ordered a set of the acl competition bearings along with other bits for the build so hopefully these will be more than up to the job. I was told they've been good on 600bhp+ builds.

One thing i did notice whilst stripping the engine was that on 3 of the pistons the oil control ring was 2.5mm, whereas on number 4 piston the oil control ring was 3.0mm, all the part numbers on the crown's match.

I'm assuming the piston was replaced at some point probably due to det etc, but when i ordered a new set of rings i was told that the stockist couldn't get me a 3mm oil contol ring as the sets would come with 2.5mm only, he also said he'd never heard of the rings coming with anything other than 2.5mm.

Is this correct and it turns out i have a piston thats been machined somehow or did the Mahle pistons come with varying oil control ring sizes?

I know Mahle Powerpak pistons come with EJ20/207 Top 1.2, 2nd 1.2, Oil 2.8mm,
EJ25/EJ257 Top 1.2, 2nd 1.2 Oil 2.5mm

Power pack plus pistons in 2618 material list a Top 1.2, 2nd 1.5, Oil 2.8mm

On the 3.0mm ring is it a one piece ring or 3 piece, 2 rails & expander ?

yeah it's a 3 piece ring, i'll get some pics up of the differences today.

The pistons are for a 92mm bore, they're the hone and fit ones, Advanced Automotive sell them on ebay, they have a square in the crown, kinda like the sti cosworth pistons only the square is smaller. They also have moly coated skirts if that helps identify them more.
