Default to decat or not to decat?

evening all,

fitted my new ninja 2 cat back today and i must admit its not as loud as i expected or hoped for! (car previously had a prodrive backbox on),

anyways just a quick question to all you knowledgable folk, thinking of getting rid of my second cat as iv been told the car should still pass the mot with the front one left in, would there be an improvement to the sound and noise level of the car by ditching the 2nd cat?

cheers neale

My hawk sounded better with the second cat out and still passed its MOT no problem.

What model is it?

its an 05 sti blobeye mate, just weighing up the options of removing the 1st or the 2nd cat, unsure if it would pass emissions test with just the 2nd cat left in? any ideas?

Sorry have no idea whether the second only will let you pass. I threw them both out in the end. made a huge difference.

The only thing I think you will have to bear in mind is if you take the first cat out you may need a remap. Not sure for definite but you may have to.

If you just remove the second my Hawk didn't need a map and ran great.

Sorry cant be any more help than that. I am sure there are plenty who may know more.

removing the second cat, and keeping the first - pass MOT
removing the first cat, and keeping the second - Fail MOT

on my WR1, they have sports cat first and decat second as standard. think this is the absolute minimum for passing MOT

perhaps its dependant on the car, you recomend just removing the 1st cat mate? big difference in noise?

The wrx will pass the mot with one removed as theres 3 on them( one in the uppipe). If it was my car getting remapped i would take them both out and refit on mot day.

Just a thought - has it still got the resonated section in?

Makes it bark a bit better when you remove that section.

no cats and no resonated section..

if your going complete decat, you will need to replace front one for MOT (on STI's). however, i believe that you don't need a remap every time you do this. get it remapped for decat, then at MOT, swap exhausts, and drive off boost. should be fine

£15, can't do pics at work. Where are you in West York's? Just to clarify this is the 2nd decat pipe that connects to the down pipe and then onto the center section.

Its basically a straight through pipe with a heat shield around it. i was going to use it with the prodrive down pipe but had already purchased a H&S 2nd pipe and none res center section.

I'm near the Wakefield side of Leeds if you fancy a drive over for a look?

how do you get away with that?! do you mean you still have the uppipe cat installed?
