2 head gaskets in 20K miles- time to bin it?
I have a Legacy Turbo Quad Cam, standard UK spec, 91 model.
I've done very limited mileage for a few years (been working from home or away and going by train). 6 years ago, had some engine problems and had new head gaskets, heads skimmed, new rings, all pressure-tested and OK.
Recently, I've been using her for a daily commute- and she's been running sweet as a nut. Until she started overheating. Turned out the rad was rusted to bits. Had a new rad, but still overheats, and seems to be pressurising the cooling system.
No mayonnaise in the oil filler, but it sounds like a head gasket again- or worse.
Can anyone think of an alternate explanation, or is it time to get rid? It will cost £750 to redo the gaskets, after which the car will be worth maybe £500!
I can't complain- I've had her 15 years, and overall it's been cheap motoring; sports performance for repmobile money, and she'll do it with major furniture items in the back!
