Default Crankshaft oil seal

My friends crankshaft oil seal is leaking again, it has been replaced twice along with the pulley wheel etc within the last 2 years 6000 miles. He has a classic 2.0 turbo wrx 1998. The car has done 105000 miles. Is this a common fault and going to happen every so often? Or just not been fixed properly? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

sounds like it have not be fixed properly the first time,

did you use a GENIUNE SEAL or a cheaper one?

because that could be your problem.

I'm not sure what was used. It was done at a garage. What could cause it to fail? How long do they normally go for?

I've read that if the oil pump backing plate screws are loose, high pressure oil will spill and push out past the crankshaft oil seal. Many times these screws are loose by 100k. Next time they are replacing the seal, have them remove the oil pump and make sure the screws are tight and loctited in place.

The crankshaft oil seal fits between the crankshaft and oil pump, so that's where the pump is.

Hi cheers for that, well since that has been fixed there is still a leak elsewhere. as your looking down towards the exhaust manifolds on the drivers side to the left of the spark plug is a bolt. From that bolt there is a small oil leak dripping onto the exhaust causing it to smoke. Any ideas why it would leak from here? and any price to get it fixed?
Regards Rich

That sounds like one of the bolts securing the rocker covers. Remove it, apply gasket sealant (silicon) to the underside of the bolt and replace it.
