Default petrol flap issue on my 96 wrx

my petrol flap will only open if i keep hold of the petrol lever inside the car, and then have someone push it open from the outside. so on my own its very difficult.

been told it might be a spring thats not popping it open. anyone else with this problem?

I had this with mine.
There little spring thing some how went missing.
I then used a spring from a pen and wound it inside the rubber stopper on the flap and cut down to suit so it just push's it open, its been like that for 2 years now and never failed.
