Default ideas on removing down pipe bolts on turbo?

am currently in process of removing my turbo, but have been stopped in my tracks by one bolt and one nut on the bottom of the turbo. have removed the exhaust down pipe to get to the bolt at back of turbo, just not the other 2. have used wd40 the night before and today. is not enough room for a socket on either so am using spanners and flexi rachet spanners, but there is no room to get any leverage. they both seem stuck solid.

please any ideas please as im completely stuck and swearing like mad. not mention loads of cuts to fingers lol

is it a classic or blobeye or what ?

get a decent socket set ? or a universal joint for sockets you do have, that an a breaker bar, they are on real tight like.

oh and have you taken the intercooler off ?

Have removed everything from turbo. All pipes, exhaust down pipe section. So the turbo is only now connected to up pipe by 1 bolt in middle and 2 nuts at front left side and at the rear of turbo. Have removed the rear nut. The other two are a problem, the bolt head is very close to the turbo housing so a socket will not fit onto it. Can only use a spanner, but there is little room for movement between turbo and wheel arch. Having same prob with the front nut also. Am going to keep coating them wd40 daily and see if will loosen over time. Is it safe to use blow torch on this area to get them loose or could this warp up pipe?

Oh its a bug eye 02 model

Well I'm in norwich, Norfolk. I am soaking bolts each day and leaving for a few days then will see if they will loosen. If this don't work then might have to weld a smaller nut onto bolt so can then use socket and breaker bar.

Soaking the nuts in wd40 can work ,but what i find even better is to warm the engine beforehand, then try taking the bolts off. Have done this on 4 x td05's,2 x td04's and 1 x vf28 in the last 2 years and even the cars which have had the o/e turbo on for 15 years have come off.

As above bit of warmth from turbo can help, but it can also help with stripping the threads for the studs if you are unlucky...............................like me

Sorry to bump an old thread but i am having similar problems as the bolts on the turbo have been soaked but are almost certain to snap.

Im thinking of getting a spare set, 5 bolts for the downpipe to turbo, 5 bolts for the uppipe to the turbo and 2 bolts for the uppipe to the mainfolds. Anyone know the best place to get them?

Hi. WD40 is not really a good stuff for seized bolts/nuts. It's more lubricator than penetrator I would say. When I was changing DP on my Classic I used small gas burner (if enough room) to heat the bolts/nuts first, I mean heat them up properly :-)

Much better than WD40 is a stuff called PLUS GAS. It is a proper penetrator to be used for seized bolts and nuts. BEST stuff I've ever used !!!

Euro Carparts is your friend to get it from. It's under £6 !!!

Good Luck buddy

bigballs,
Last time I needed DP and uppipe bolts and nuts I got them from Harvey Smith R.I.P on here so it might be worth to ask Harvey's wife if she has any left ?

I definitely have some nuts somewhere in the garage if you're interested. Will just have to look for them.

thats great of you, thanks mate - its worth the best part of £20 to know the car wont be off the road while i try to source new bolts.

will 2 sets of these do for upipe and downpipe? do you think the other side of uppipe will be ok.

Don't change the studs if you don't have to buddy. If some of them are still in good condition, leave them.

What bolts you're talking about ?

Holy thread revival batman!

So hopefully someone can come up with an idea for me. I am in the process of removing the engine of my hawk due to headgasket failure. Literally only have the turbo, starter and transmission to disconnect then im ready to lift, however, im currently stuck on two nuts beneath the turbo attached to the downpipe.

These are both 14mm. One of them is starting to round so ive had to take a step back. I have tried PB (penetration blast) and also some over expensive WD40 one which is meant to do the same thing. This did not work. I have then tried getting the torch out and using heat. The issue im finding is a socket will not fit flush as its started to round and only an opened ended spanned seems to hold tight and then just take a bit more off the nut.

Has anyone got any ideas on what i can try next? There is hardly any room so cant get an impact driver down there nor can i see a way of coming up from underneath either

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ant

A six point short socket and a wobble 3/8 extension. Sometimes a uj and a very long extension as well. Heat helps.

Did this job a week ago, always start on the worst bolt/nut to get to, leave the easy ones until last,
But the lower ones were accessed from underneath.
