Default engine problems

hi guys 96 sti wagon been getting problems on and off for a while now, before it was like a sensor was breaking down and the engine would run rough popping and banging out the exhaust mis-firing then all of a sudden it would go back to normal.. came out this morning and whatevers been breaking down temporarily has packed in altogether now car doesnt want to idle, when i give it gas again bad mis-fire doesnt want to drive now? changed idle speed, throttle position, plugs, coil packs and a second hand air flow meter.. could it be the air flow meter thats gubbed???

Usual test for MAF is to idle then pull out the plug.
If engine carries on unchanged then MAF has gone, if engine goes rough or stops then MAF is OK.

Other thing to check woul be the coil packs if your car has them as they cause misfire when they are failing or misfire on boost. If you changed them did it not help?

Try the ECU reset and see if there are any error codes.
