Treating the Window Rubber seals?
#1
Hi
My window is really slowing down when i put it up
I can hear the motor straining.
Also - I have to open and close my door to get an airtight seal
It seems the rubber is grabbing the glass.
What do any of u use to treat the rubber?
Vasaline?
Washing up liquid?

Neither of those - they are sticky.
Clean them with a good rubber cleaner, then use some dry graphite powder, (Zebrite stove polish *might* do it) if you can get it, or talcum powder.

Graphite powder might be tricky....try a good ironmongers (if there are any left). Zebrite you can get from same or a fireplace shop.
Rubber cleaner you should be able to get from Halfords or similar.
This is a known problem, the issue is that the rubber door trims are quite sticky so you need to clean them first then use a dry lubricant (if that makes sense) on them to stop the glass grabbing on them . Talc will probably work as well as anything and worth trying first. Put it on a cloth and rub it on to the window rubbers where the glass slides against it, after cleaning the rubbers.

PTFE/silicone spray from RS, works a treat. If the window is struggling it could be slightly out of alignment and is pushing on the seal tightly as my drivers door did this, its caused by shutting the door by the window.

The place that usually causes the problem is the triangular piece (where the mirror is), wind the window down and put some silicon grease in the rubbers in the triangular piece, rub it in with a finger. Always works for me.

I dont recommend this but... on a car i was mending once the seal didnt quit seal with the door... so we squirted expanding foam filler into the hole on it.. worked quite well..... dont recommand this though as that was on a cheap car..

i got some graphite powder today.
we still have an iron mongers here - a benefit from being from the back of beyond
quickly put some on after cleaning the rubber... and it worked
is about 90% better!
gonna have another go and clean the glass too.. and coat it more evenly... but it works perfectly
cheers

I noticed today that my Legacy has an extra bit of rubber, cut from a flat sheet, glued in the doorseal by the mirror. Seems to stiffen the doorseal in general.
Probably only neccessay on older more worn seals.
