Question Where is the water comming from

Hi please help if you can. Thanks for reading this.

I keep finding water in the spare wheel well in the boot of my 1999 STi. I found about 2/3" in there a few days ago. I drained it all out and now there is more. We had a boot full of luggage etc and it was all still dry after driving 150 miles so I dont think its comming from the top.

There are no holes in the floor, but I have noticed today (raining) that there is some water pooling at the top flat surface of the well just under where the boot tray clips into on the passenger side. I cannot find any dripping water and I have not added/changed anything. How can it be getting so wet so regularly

Any ideas or sugestions very welcome

Its always around the rear lights.
They have a non setting sealent, and if the lights have been removed once, its normally a bit of issue getting them back without leaks.

I recently re-sealed mine, using Carafax, which is used on caravans. I only have the white version, instead of the black that is used on there now, but it doesn't bother me.

You could use a regular sealent, bathroom type. But It'll be hard to get the light out again if needed, but not impossible.

Had this on my last one, I tightened the nuts that hold in the light cluster and never came back. Worth a try before you start removing the clusters and adding additional sealant.

Thumbs up Ahhh

A BIG thank you to all you guys for your very helpful sugestions. At least I now have an idea where to look when it stops raining! Funnily enough the rear light was taken out on the side where the boot is wet last year for a respray. Sounds like this could be the culprit.

Once again thank you all

there may be a small rubber bung in the bottom of the spare wheel well, there was on my 98 classic wagon. I had water ingress as well and took this out it helped let the water in the wheel well drain down. There may also be a build up in behind the acess panel for the light bulbs. I had to stick a pipe in and syphon the water out.
Sealed the lights and problem solved.

I had a green/brown swimming pool on the passenger side, where the jack tools go. I had to use a sponge to get it out.

ginger, what did you seal your lights with?

Unhappy Curses

Right I have checked the rear lights and they are tight and there is black sealant all the way around. I could not find any evidence of water comming in from around them. We had rain last night and I had drained the wheel well previously. I go out this morning and there is 1/2" in there again

Any more ideas? I might move my koi in there!!

Get in the boot with a torch and have someone spray a hose over it

If its not the rear lights chances are its your spoiler, tape news paper to the underside of the boot and then hose it and see if it gets wet

You can't check the lights' sealant without removing them. Get one out and you will probably see the sealant has gone hard and is full of grit, allowing water in.

As noted above, Carafax is the stuff to use, buy from e-bay.
Remove all old sealant, I used a screwdriver to scrape it off and cleaned it up with White Spirit.
DO NOT try and re-use the original stuff. DO NOT use silicone/Tiger Seal etc, or the next time the lights have to come out, you are fekked

If it's NOT the lights, it could be the spoiler, as above.

BUT: it could also be:
Boot seal, (seal under it with Carafax)
Rear Screen seal, (it'll need removed and re-seated)
The little plastic ventilation thingies on the inner wheel arch, they sometimes stick open allowing water in.

Smile Found it

Its the boot seal allowing water to get behind it which is then trickling down the rear bulkhead and collecting in the spare wheel recess.

Water is pooling between the seal and the chassis at the bottom corner where the lowest part of the boot lid goes. On the other side to the boot lock. How is water getting behind the seal?? Carnt find any holes in it?

What can I do??

Remove the seal and bed it in Carafax. It stopped mine.

DON'T use silicone, water curing, or otherwise, or if, (when), the part ever needs to be off again, you'll be fekked.

The CORRECT stuff to use is non-setting mastic, aka bedding mastic, and the stuff above in my post is the most easily available.

Is that the person you got yours from? It doesn't say if its black or white. Looks the same as the tubes of white I have.

It's a caravan dealership, afaik, or a caravan repair centre, they delivered next day.

Mine is pale grey, but you can't see it behind the lights anyway.
