exhaust flange

i got an exhaust system that has rusted flanges where they mount together. Do i take a file to it or not? I got new gaskets, just dont want it blowing when fitted. Shall i use a sealant?

A wire brush should clean it up enough mate.

i have the same on my exhaust (magnex) as you have said give them a good clean use some exhaust sealant, if they continue to get worse have them cut off and either new ones welded in or the exhaust welded together.
