What engine is it as there are several different ones in the subaru range (and by that I mean there is the phase 1, phase 1.5, phase 2, new age etc etc etc), even better if you know what car it came out of though it could be piston slap but unless we hear it then its only a guess

Could be either piston slap, big bearings away or crankshaft on way out!
Mine is the latter, just waiting for an engine rebuild.

Not necessarily. Piston slap when cold is not uncommon and need not be serious depending on it's severity. It certainly needs to be listened to by an experienced mechanic, preferably with a lot of Subaru experience.

No way of knowing until it's been listened to! If it was the bearings, it would mean an immediate re-build/replacement.

I thought piston slap was only on 1997 cars? maybe that's just for the GT-Bs though. Mine has piston slap, it always gos away once warm (takes longer and is louder to begin with in sub-0 temps) and the car's on 160,000 miles and going strong. It really depends on how well the engine's been looked after but piston slap itself is not a problem.
