engine
well i got a engine for the car real cheap. know the lad and car well, but was told when got it that the engine knocks on start up but goes away when warm. is this serious and what could be a matter with it

What engine is it as there are several different ones in the subaru range (and by that I mean there is the phase 1, phase 1.5, phase 2, new age etc etc etc), even better if you know what car it came out of

I thought piston slap was only on 1997 cars? maybe that's just for the GT-Bs though. Mine has piston slap, it always gos away once warm (takes longer and is louder to begin with in sub-0 temps) and the car's on 160,000 miles and going strong. It really depends on how well the engine's been looked after but piston slap itself is not a problem.
