Default Turbo diesel burning water.

First of all sorry for posting a non scooby problem here but a friend has a problem on an 05 Nissan Navara.

It smokes like hell its a grey colour and seems to have water vapours in it. It's worse when its been idling for a few moments then he sets off. My original thought was the headgasket but there's no cream or pressuring of the coolant system but it does use water.
If it was the headgasket then surely there would be more pressure in the cylinders than what there is in the cooling system which wouldn't allow water into the bores.

Hmmm as I typed that I just thought on the downward stroke there would be no pressure but vacuum is that right?

My only thought was if its a water cooled turbo then its leaking it from there, there is also what I think is an EGR valve which is also water cooled/ had water going through it.

Does anyone know much about td that can shed some light on it?

Thanks.
