Default Decat and Insurance

I am thinking perhaps next year i might look at decatting my sti ppp. although i know that i would have to swap out the decat pipe for mot time, but what about informing the insurance company? i am just wondering what folks do about that cos telling the insurer that your car is not road legal would mean no insurance. not telling them might cause problems come claim time. any advice/experience appreciated.

You have to tell the insurance about any mods

that's what i thought. but surely if you tell them of a mod that makes the car not road legal, then they wont insure you i would have thought?

A specialist will be fine with it mate. With-holding mods from insurance companies is the big no-no!!

would a sports catted exhaust be within your budget?
And make sure you declare all your modifications - peace of mind if nothing else mate!

the absence of a cat itself is not illegal so long as it passes emissions test.

ok...but there's not likely to be a car on the planet that will pass the emissions test without any cats whatsoever...is there? looking at my last emissions results, prior to be buying the car, it was close to one of the limits. take out the cat and no way would it pass, therefore making it illegal.

how can a specialist insurer insure a car that is likely to illegal due to no cats and failing an emissions test? i would declare all mods...just cant get my head around declaring mods that would make a car not pass an mot.

I just told insurance company that my whole Exhaust was Modifield/Adaptered as if I was involded in a crash, it's highly unlikely they'd do an emission test on it.

Most people I know who have made a claim off their insurance, someone just came out and inspected the car - Tyres, Unlisted Mod's etc

I have never told my insurers that i have a de-catted exhaust and they have never asked specifically. I think it is just enough for them to know that it is a stainless aftermarket exhaust.
I would think that if your car and sensors are healthy, then the PPP sports cat fitted in the down-pipe will be enough to pass the emissions.

I woulda thought it would be fine. When you call the insurance the bird on the phone wont have the slightest idea what your talking about, and the MODS will be put down as something generic like "non standard exhaust"....when i insured my old PPP they never even had that, and refered to it as "<35% power increase pack"...morons......I ran my old car for years with a HKS BOV and that could not be covered as they "did'nt have it listed, so would void my policy"....nutz to them, tell them it was on there when you bought the car as a factory standard car, fall back on the "well i'm not a car mechanic, so how would i know" excuse....of course any specialist insurer worth his salt with understand exactly what your saying....I go with a large main stream insurer, but 15years without a claim allows this luxury...
