Yes vf29 excellent upgrade, i made 340 bhp on my MY99 UK with vf29, fmic, walbro pump, full decat, kn, using standard injectors and fuel pressure reg, you will need a remap though

I wouldnt say a remap is essential. A simple check for det and fueling check after fitment is advised. Too much emphasis on remapping mostly endorsed by mappers. The original ecu is a very capable device with regard to changes.

I would agree that the original ecu is a very capable device, but a remap is the safest way to go imho especially if you are adding other supporting mods like a 3 point boost solenoid. Also to get the best out of the vf 29, it will require more boost than the std 0.8 bar which his current td04 is producing. Lastly a remap will give you all round piece of mind and may show up other issues ,that a simple check for det & fuelling might not imho.

Scaremongering i.m.o
If you understood properly the capability of the o.e ecu it can handle most of whats thrown at it by change of circumstance. If you listened to everything spouted you couldnt empty the ashtray without remapping!!
Wont be agreed with by many I appreciate but I have been there and done that.
Remap from summer to winter would be essential if you listen to the arguments.

Upgrading to a VF29 Fro TD04 without a remap would be a complete waste of time as i did and it felt slower until it was remapped and can take advantage of higher boost settings

I have ran an 03 WRX with an STI turbo and intercooler and the rest. 70K- 120K without issue and still running 1.2 boost fully de-catted. The mappers would have a heart failure. Checked on wideband and det cans and Im afraid its still on song. No remap ever and this guy drives the life outta it.

bugeyeJohn: The VF29 is a very good turbo and capable of a good bit more than the 300 bhp you seek, typically 330-350 bhp and sometimes a bit more. If you don't already have yellow 440 injectors which are cheap enough to buy then you would be best to fit these at the same time but check because you may already have them subject to model and year.
Do not fit the VF29, with or without injectors without getting a remap. You MIGHT get away with it but what is for sure is you will not be getting the best out of your car in terms of potential or efficiency.

I fitted VF29 to my MY99 and it ran like **** and sounded like the turbo was gonna blow up until it was remapped, so a remap is essential when upgrading to this turbo

if you are not wanting to go over 300hp then just stick with the td04 with the right basic mods you will see near 290 with a remap fella, save you money and buy some mods..
