A fault code check would be of use to you. All you need is here;

Sounds like the maf to me and the fact you have an induction which kills the maf in the first place of the cars not bee. Remapped which being an my97 I would imagine not as only aftermarket management can be used i would say the maf IMHO but the idle control valve may also be faulty as there known to go but won't cause your back fire though

Also shows all the signs of your VTA dump valve being the cause. Block it off and see if it still does it then.

Is the Pipercross a panel or a cone type induction kit??

And, what boost 'control' do you have??

What does the car usually boost to, above standard??

Have you had it serviced, changed the plugs or fluids in that year of blissfull unawareness??

A quick 'search' on here would of answered that question for you.

What exactly 'did' you do whan you had the MAF off??

That would tell me alot.
As long as 'all' you did was, remove the MAF, and then replace the MAF correctly. Without disturbing or damaging anything else.

So, so far, the OP has 3 different possible faults MAF, IACSV and DV. And yes it could be any one of them, or any combination of them.

But which????? I hear you cry!

Why geuss at it??

You have a built it diagnostic system on the car and the instructions on how to use it.

So, not wanting to sound like a ******' parrot, but;

That will illiminate the MAF and IACSV and other sensors then

Baileys are renown for failing and causing issues, advise would to remove and replace with OE or remove and block off the open pipes and run without.. Seriously, i would and do run without a DV at all.

Why are you running a aftermarket controller?? The OE system is perfectly capable and without the correct AFRs you may be putting you engine at risk.

Yes, you should be hearing the fuel pump prime when you turn on ign. Access is under the back seat, you can check power there.

l have a funny feeling it might be the fuel pump? Is there a fuse for this.. Because the nite before this happern,, l lose the number plates lights? Had to replace the fuse.. I drove about half mile to get a fuse? Car was fine.. I woke up in the morning and let the car warm up for 5 mins, then got to the bottom of the st and then l start to lose power. Manage to get the car back home just.. If would suggle to tick over on its on,,with the idle going up and down. Everytime l put my foot on the gas it would cut out,. Now it just wont start.. I change the plugs and leads about 3 months ago.. Plus a oil and fitter change.. I havent done the fuel fitter yet.. I dont no much about scoobys yet still learning.. Had a good year of fun? Now the problems have started am lose.. Thanks for your help learnt a lot.

I couldn't tell you where the fuse is, just pull them one by one and check. There is a relay too, but again i don't know which one. If you lift the back seat out you will see the pump connector block, check there with a multi-meter to see if you are getting power to it, if you are then the pump is fudged, if not then it is a fuse or relay.

Fusebox Index.

In which case i would suspect the relay, there are iirc, 3 above the fuse box in the footwell, 2 are round and green, try swapping them over and see.

I had a similar problem with mine when the internal spring in my dump valve broke kept cutting out every time I come to a set of lights and the car was idling it would cut out lol pane in the butt trying to get home, it happened to me before so I knew what it was,

RE the back firing mine always backfired with the DTA dump valve (forge) but when I put the recirc valve back on the popping when changing gear just went instantly my car didn't like the DTA dump valve,

RE the power loss like bat says no power at pump with multi meter check the relay if you put you finger on it and turn on the ignition (dont start it) you can feel it click, if it doesn't click then either the relay is dead or the power to the relay has been broken(immobiliser or fault), while you have the multi meter handy check the relay socket for power this will point the finger at the relay or not lol (look at the bottom of the relay most have small diagrams telling you power,earth,switch, ETC)
