Engine coolant temp sensor, is this expensive and complicated to get replaced? Does it just do what is says on the tin?

Don't know if it's expensive, i wouldn't think it is. But if it is the sensor i am thinking that it is, it just screws into the water rail, which is bolted on the top of the block. Easy to change.
