Using oil - a lot
Hi All
Time will tell I guess but wondered if anyone could shed light on this.
I lent my car to a frined sor 2 1/2 yrs while work abroad and Im just getting it back up to scratch.
Boost control was all over and it turns out 2nd high pressure pipe to the boost control valve was split, new 3mm Samco fixed that.
Then I changed plugs and leads (Original leads on 97 UK turbo car with 150K well over due). Plugs were black. Silly me didn't put 2 & 2 together and immediatly thought the worst that maybe my piston rings or valve guides were gone. The I realised that the broken pipe meant it was venting to atmosphere and therefore running very rich.
So I'll give it 1000miles or so and check plugs again, However...
In 1000 miles I've used a lot of oil. From full to 1/2 way between full and low. Hence my worry about rings & guides.
But and I may be clutching at straws here, if its running very rich isn't it running cool and may that cause increase oil usage?
Thanks for getting to the end of this - I realise I've been waffling.
Cheers

I wouldn't say that is alot, thats probably about half a litre in 1000 miles.
For a turbo engine thats done 150k i'd say that was rather good. Things are probably just starting to get a little worn.
If it was that amount after 100 miles i'd say there was a problem.
