My car has an airbag steering wheel which is in really bad condition was wondering if it is just a matter of disconnecting it and fitting a non airbag one or is it more involved

If there is no airbag connected, it'll throw up the airbag light. It can be sorted witha very cheap (less than a quid) electrical resistor. Have a search for more details.
But basically, the answer is yes.

Cheers would just taking the bulb out work or will it bring up a fault. I was concerned that their was more to it like the horn / airbag connections on the steering column
Taking the airbag bulb out will obviosuly stop it working, but its a bit of a bodge.
If you do the resistor method, at least any other airbags should work.
If you get the right wheel/boss combo, all indicators and horn should still work.
