Not alot to be honest, i think you need to change the ecu if you wanted to get it re-maped...

i'd say a back box and a dump valve is the safesty way as you need to get it mapped
if you de-cat and etc

fit new panal filter i.e green, check brakes ok, fit standard re circ dv, lower it, de tango, vortex or similar cat back exhaust, imo for cheap start to good looking and sounding motor, also assuming your tyres and other important things are in good condition already!

You DO NOT need a dump-valve, it already has one and changing it is a backwards step.

The 98 cars had two-pot brakes at the front which were pretty dire, so that would be my first swap, before doing ANYTHING to the engine. Later 4-pot brakes are an excellent first upgrade, but need the discs and pads to match.

I MIGHT get bigger wheels, if it's standard it will be on 16", WRX 17" wheels are a good upgrade and cheap. The above brakes WILL go under both.

Next I'd look at a thicker REAR arb, leaving the front one alone, and fitting solid droplinks all round.
After that a full geometry setup.

Only then would I look at the engine.
You DO need an aftermarket ecu if you want more power, there is more choice now than when I got mine, which is a LINK, but it's been mapped by Bob Rawle and goes like fek.

DO avoid induction kits and VTA dumpvalves if you want your engine to be happy, and safe. The stock plastic dumpvalve is OK up to 300+bhp, so a new one is a waste of money until you get there.

Be VERY careful: the 98 engine is NOT the strongest out there and if you get it wrong a rebuild is horribly expensive
There are those on here who WILL say, "It's your car, do it if you want to". Try and sift out that sort of post from those with genuine knowledge

Best of luck

Do not get a dump valve, the car has a perfectly good one. Dump valve will not give a performance increase.

A full decat exhaust will give you about an extra 20bhp.

Being a 97/98 model if you want further improvements then an Apexi/Simtek or other ECU will be needed to fitted and mapped to your car. This should see around 280bhp.

Then you will need a bigger turbo, gearbox, brakes- a must, clutch, suspension, bigger injectors, fuel pump, new fuel regulator and map sensor

Edit new intercooler, better spec engine (forged pistons rods etc)

By this time you will be on the slippery slope with no way of getting back.

Andy

Do you really need a Remap if you fit a de-cat and Air filter? Mine's std apart from these ( running 1 bar of boost Is that std??) and a dump valve was fitted to the car when I bought it.
Sorry I to have a MY98 UK turbo 2000 have a look at my pic's...
