What is in there at the moment? If you don't know, it doesn't really matter too much about mixing grades if it is just a top up. A good semi or fully synthetic should do.

Lots of good engine oils out there,so a half decent fully synthetic will do.How long was your last oil change ?.If you type in engine oil in the search bar,it will provide you with lots of good reccommendations for your specific age/model of car.

Thanks for putting the link up.

It depends on the car, but generally a 10w-40 or 10w-50 for classics or a 5w-40 for newage, perhaps a 10w-50 if heavily modified.

i believe that its not advisable to mix semi and fully synthetic. the grades might not matter but if you dont know whats in it at the moment, then the advice i got from Scoobyworld was to NOT put in fully synthetic, only use semi-synthetic...or get a full oil change then you will know whats in it. hth.

If the cars been sitting for 6 month, id be changing the oil. For the sake of £60 for a gallon of oil and a filter, well cheaper than a rebuild.

Change the oil would be my advice.

As stated above its not good to mix oils.

It's absolutely fine to mix mineral, semi-synthetic, synthetic with very few exceptions (none of which would be in a scooby). Personally, I'd change the oil too, but it's not definately going to be a problem.

If you have no idea when the oil was put in, how much use the oil had since it was changed or what oil was used for the change, then yes, it would be worth changing the oil.

I really don't understand the thinking behind only adding a semi-synthetic if you are unsure what the oil is. 99+% of oils mix, everything used in Subarus mixes.

This seems to be what they are saying.
1) If the car has semi-synthetic in there and you add semi, it will be fine.
2) If the car has synthetic in the engine and you add semi, it will be fine.
3) If the car has semi-synthetic and you add synthetic, it's bad.

Aren't 2) and 3) basically the same thing? The only problem of mixing a full and semi synthetic is that the quality of the full synthetic is diluted, so perhaps a waste of money if you are adding a litre of top end race oil to a sump with 4L of knackered low quality semi.

Cheers

Tim

Tim, i think scoobyworld were saying that it could have been potentially fully synthetic in my engine and to add a standard mineral was not recommended...that would have been number 4 in your list

so on their recommendation i have bought a reputable litre of 10w-40 oil for topping up purposes.

Ah, okay, but adding a mineral oil to synthetic and vice versa is 100% fine. Let them do the work on the car, but ask us about oils

When I checked out oil for my car (MY98) i was told not to touch synthetic as it was too thin and my year needed semi.If it was me i would change the oil for peace of mind as it doesnt take very long to do

Whoever told you that synthetic oils are thinner than mineral oils or semi-synthetics knows very little about oils, I would not take their advice if they offer it in the future.

Synthetic oils can be made thinner than semi-synthetics, but they don't have to be. A 5w-40 is a 5w-40, a 10w-40 is a 10w-40 etc etc etc. It doesn't matter what it's made of, an oil of a certain grade (viscosity), is that grade. MY98 cars are 100% fine running on synthetic oils, we deal with several running Fuchs Pro S and Millers CFS oils, we have sponsored classic Imprezas that run synthetic oils. Believe me, synthetics in all Imprezas is the best option.

Cheers

am i right in assuming that once a car is run on fully synthetic it cannot be run on anything else? and can a switch to fully synthetic be okay at any mileage/age? thanks Tim.

You can change oil types around as you want in a car. I don't really suggest it in a well worn engine as if it's going to drink oil, it may as well be cheap. Okay, you could use a thicker semi or synthetic to stop oil use. If an engine has been using a semi and is in good condition, it's best to change to a synthetic to keep it in good condition.

Cheers

Hope this isn't a derail as such but checking oil... I can take 10 measures after the car has cooled own for 10 mins and im getting random feed back on the dip stick. The dip stick always has the oil can symbol facing me and I drive it in for 2 seconds then pull it straight back out.

Sorry another Oil question.. Mine was change for Mobile one 6 weeks ago by a good crew of guys, however it's consistency has darkened far faster then I anticipated. It's lost the golden honey look and there appears to be far darker as i've compare it to fresh fully synthetic oil.

Sorry for the wall of text

A fully synthetic 5w-40 will be ideal

Not sure what the random readings are.

Mobil 1 is a good oil with good detergency properties, so it's probably just cleaning the engine. The colour change is fine.

Cheers
