Yep they'll fit and no issues with rubbing but as far as I know the correct size is 215/40/17 so if you fit 45's you're speedo will become a few mph more accurate or possibly under read depending on how accurate it is at the minute.

its the wrong tyre size, it can make your speedo under read (which is illegal), you need 205/45/17 (the correct size for a classic on 17's) or the more preferred tyre size due to a greater choice is 215/40/17.

i did think about the speedo error, which works out at 2.3%
when i compare the speedo to the gps it is 5% out anyway so the speedo will be more accurate.

When subaru released the classic, the uk cars had 15' wheels which had 195/55/15 tyres on them as std fitment. My understanding of tyre profile is to keep the speedo correct you go up a tyre size, down a profile, and up a rim size.So when subaru started fitting 16' wheels as std like on my 99 uk turbo it had 205/50/16 tyres.
So 17' wheels by right should be 215/45/17 which is exactly what they fitted on the newage cars, although a lot of classic owners like to opt for 215/40/17.
I have 225/45/17 goodyear F1's on my MY2000 uk wagon and they only rub on extreme cornering
