Default un metered air

what are the symptoms of having unmetered air entering the throttle body?

i.e a slpit in the y pipe or TB connector?

I am guessing that the air is under pressure and will be exiting the system.
I guess loss of power and a check engine light?
Mind you, I don't really know what I am talking about

Y piece or TB joint? Dependent on which one. It will cause you to lose boost, run a little lean, EGT to rise and DET to occure Peter. As you know, non of these are good for the engine.

Advise: Fix/replace ASAP even if it's just a temp fix until you get a servicable replacement.

Steve.

when I had a leak on my dumpvalve gasket, it wouldn't idle and if I held the throttle open so it produced a bit of boost it overfuelled massively, the exhaust went black in a matter of a minute. I presume because once air gone through maf the ecu thinks its going in the engine so it adds the calculated amount of fuel, if the air is escaping then there will be far to much fuel compared to the air getting in the cylinders. I had no check light just terrible running, And after I found the fault it was me who had forgotten to pinch the bolts up on the dumpvalve and the had vibrated a bit loose, hence letting the air out under boost.

heres where i sound like a noob!

my car actually runs fine and pulls like a good un. As my exhaust was too loud i fitted a bung, and it has a nice standard sound to it, now i hear engine noises i haven't before.

spec:-
3in decat d/pipe
3inch system 4.5 in box with bung now fitted.
pp chip
hks IK
Catch can setup
DV delete

when on full boost i hear a huge sucking sound come from what sounds like the intercooler area. i can only describe it as if someones switches on a jet powered hoover and to be fair it sounds good. but may not be right

I have tried under idle spraying carb cleaner around the joints with nothing!
Could a joint be opening under load or is this normal : )

car is fine under idle/load/1.1 boost

Don't know, never driven a modded one with a quiet/OE exhaust.

As to whether it's all as it should be, i don't know. But it sound nice though.

On a serious note, a car running lean will 'seem' to be running better. Usually, just before a failure of some kind. So i would stay off the loud untill your 100% all is good.

IIRC you have an AFR meter fitted?

Edit: Did you do the resonator box delete too Peter?? That will be quite a large increase in induction noise.

it could just be the turbo you are hearing, they sound very much like a hoover going mental when you come onto boost. the only 100% certain way to check is to take it all apart and check all your joints. You could try spraying carb cleaner or wet start on the pipework, at idle, if the revs rise then there is your leak.
Even a small leak can cause revs to drop, especially when you just accelerated and are letting the throttle close.

Im such a dick!! It was a hearing illusion of sorts. Took to garage and turns out the bung i fitted seems to have a venturi effect and when on boost makes the car sound like a jet or screamer pipe which was what they initially thought. lol
my left ear must have assumed it was coming from the intercooler area. I feel like a right div.

Any hoo thanks for the comments the car sounds fu*kin mental on full bore.

Lol I know. The garage already think some village has lost their idiot when they see me!

Last winter my civic needed some work so I followed the wife to the garage to drop it off..........she stopped at the entrance as there was a car blocking the way, so i slowed down as you do...only thing, there was a couple of inches of snow at the time and my car wouldn't stop.
I ended up crashing into my own car with my own car!! all the mechanics were bent over double laughing.

You might not be such a div mate i drove my mates 95 wrx to leicester a few weeks ago,and every time i had my boot down i could hear a sucking noise .Being as the car had no dump valve and std air filter ,i thought the turbo was on its way out as every time i was on the gas it sounded like a dumpvalve going off .When i got home i lifted the bonnet to see a dirty great blitz sus induction kit which he had fitted without me knowing. All i was hearing was induction roar.
