Neutral Position Switch
Ok, now its still nice to know what goes wrong with your car, and this on mine is fooked and im waiting for the part to come in so it can be fixed
But what exactly does the neutral position switch do and apart from making my car seem a little laggier and have no top end (not that im pushing her with this fault anyway), precisely what is the purpose of said switch?
Thanks in advance
Tony

Tells the ECU when the gearbox is in neutral (or not).
Does what it says on the tin, and therefore give the ECU a way of modifying the engine's behaviour when it knows there is no load on it.
Depending on which unit you look at, there will be hundreds of lines of code that don't run (or run different) according to the position of that switch. One obvious example is acceleration enrichment, which is switched off if you tread on the throttle with the car in "neutral", thereby contributing to the Impreza's fantastic fuel economy. ()

On a NewAge STI (if faulty !) it disables the AVCS so the car will be flat on power and smooth as silk...
Mine caused problems first time she was mapped, I took her out to show a pal how awesome it was with 340 bhp and it felt like 170 bhp instead.
No-LOL.

i found out the other day that my one isn't connected. one of the people who had the car before had swapped lots of bits into the car, ie ecu and wiring loom from a later car but decided not to change the sensor to the right one and i hadn't noticed it until it went to the garage the other day.

OP - remove your current switch, and inspect the tip for wear. If it's visible, you could try doing the above. - No guarantees though

Isnt it on the side of the gearbox not too far away from the reverse lights sensor ??
there cant be too many switches on the gearbox, the neutral one is the higher mounted one of the 2

Ok I walked into that one
No doubt this is what is causing the slight lag im getting between gear changes, still didnt know what was up until she was on the rolliing road and the monitor picked up it wasnt beiing activated when changing gears (still the car produced 323lbs of torque and 310bhp at 5570 on the spec c before hitting what seemed like a brick wall )
Rich, would mess about with it but as the part is ordered I may was well just fit the new one
Cheers all

Mine had worn on my bugeye sti and the easy way to guess it's gone is if it feels slow sometimes. Mine would sometimes feel rapid and rev well, then another time you'd floor it it'd feel like someone had removed th turbo and just very linear. On the sti it enables the avcs so you loose the 'kick' of the cam timing change without it.
I bought a new switch from Subaru. Haven't fitted it yet as I modified my old one (got a copper washer and sanded it down thin then swapped it with the thick washer on the NPS thus moving the tip of the switch closer)

You could download software such as ecuexplorer and that shows it in I/O form when in and out of gear.
