Default Timing Belt Change

What's everyone's thoughts on belt change timings? My car is a 2002 Bug STi and it had the belt changed at the correct time and is now pushing 86k so should be due again at 100k or 10 years I believe? Should I change it slightly early, maybe next year at 9 years / 90k or leave it to the 100k / 10 year service??

It would change it at 90,000 just for peace of mind,if you read some of the threads on broken belts its not worth the risk. When they go it can be a nightmare and not cheap and prob a engine out job

I tend to put a new belt on when i first buy the car just for peace of mind. I even changed the oil pump and thermostat on this car so i know it has reliable parts that wont fail me and cost a rebuild

Thanks for the help guys. I won't be using the car much as it's not a daily driver. I'll have a good nosey at it and most probably change at 90k.

Thanks mate I know it was changed at the 5 year point, i.e 2007 so it should be due in 2012 but I'll probably change it next year to be on the safe side then.

EDIT: Hmm, I'm going to have to double check this as it might be due.......

I've double checked and according to my service book it's every 60 months or 50K. It was last done in 10/2006 at 52k so it's due at 100k or 10/2011.

Panic over as far as it being actually due That said I won't leave it until Oct 2011, I'll probably change it in the summer.

Thing is I'm loathed to start changing things too early as you can end up chasing your tail with it all. How old was your belt?

Hope you get it sorted asap mate and not too costly. I'd be interested to know if there are mitigating circumstances, or whether it's just been bad luck.

It's annoying that you have to start worrying about a belt change before Subaru say it's actually due, that said I'd rather have that worry than a rebuild worry......

I'll get on the blower and find out how much to change just the belt.
